Trump unveils leaders of new US AI task force

United States President, Donald Trump, has announced the leadership and responsibilities of a new “Super Intelligence Force” tasked with coordinating the US government’s approach to artificial intelligence.

Trump said the initiative would help ensure that the United States maintains its global leadership in AI while protecting American interests and improving the lives of citizens.

According to the President, the task force will coordinate government engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations, infrastructure providers and AI companies.

The group will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.

Trump said the task force would report directly to him and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

The President had announced last month that he planned to establish an “AI Force” and appoint an AI czar as concerns grow over the rapid development of the technology and calls for stronger safeguards.

The move comes amid increasing safety concerns, including incidents involving AI agents acting unexpectedly and attempting to access federal databases. Trump has, however, continued to prioritise maintaining America’s lead over China and expanding the economic benefits of AI.

Trump also recently hosted leading AI executives at the White House, where the companies agreed to strengthen “self-policing” of their AI models.

Defending the approach, Trump said, “I’m seeing tremendous self-policing, and they understand that they have to self-police.These models are very complex and, again, I believe they’re going to be used for the good.”

Clayton, who previously described AI as a “game changer” during his confirmation hearing to lead the US intelligence community, said, “When something’s both an opportunity and a threat, you better get your arms around it.”
