Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has defended his decision to appeal to United States President Donald Trump over concerns surrounding the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davido made the clarification during exchanges with users on X on Tuesday after his earlier call for Trump and the international community to pay attention to the August 15 poll generated mixed reactions online.
The singer had urged the US president to take note of developments in Osun, expressing concerns about potential violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process.
One X user, Ifedayo, also known as JIMCRUZ, questioned Davido over his appeal, asking, “Is everything okay, David?”
Responding, Davido said, “So I can’t tweet my president again?”
Another user, ÌKÀ NATION, @Wuwaika90, shared a photograph of Davido seated and laughing with President Bola Tinubu and asked, “If Trump is your president, who is this?”
Davido replied, “He’s my president too; I get dual citizenship. Any problem?”
Davido holds both Nigerian and American citizenship.
He is also a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and has publicly backed his uncle’s re-election bid.
In his earlier message directed at Trump, Davido called for international attention to the political situation in Osun ahead of the election.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process,” he wrote.
He also appealed to politicians and residents to avoid violence and support a peaceful electoral process.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.”
