I won’t apologise to Edo gov over WAEC result jibe – Davido

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has rejected calls for him to apologise to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over his social media post about the governor’s alleged West African Examinations Council result.

Davido said he had no reason to apologise, arguing that his post was a response to Okpebholo’s remarks about his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Speaking in an interview with News Central in Osun State, the singer said he only drew attention to the academic record of the Edo governor after Okpebholo criticised Adeleke during activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

“I’m not going to apologise. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just telling people of the state the results their governor has,” Davido said.

The controversy followed comments by Okpebholo, who mocked Adeleke over his dancing and questioned his leadership.

Responding to the remarks, Davido shared what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story on Friday.

Davido subsequently criticised the Edo governor for travelling to Osun State to attack his uncle politically.

He said, “You came, you left your state, you came to another state. You came in and then started talking that my uncle is a dancer; he is not serious.”

The singer also questioned Okpebholo’s electoral legitimacy, saying, “First of all, you were not even elected; you were selected.”

Davido further warned that Adeleke would respond politically when the time came for the Edo governor to seek re-election.

“In fact, finish your three years, we’ll visit you when it’s time for you to get re-elected,” he said.

The post had earlier drawn criticism from a commentator, Tugbiyele, who described the publication as inappropriate and urged Davido to apologise to Okpebholo.

Tugbiyele said the alleged result, regardless of the grades, should not have been used to ridicule the governor.

He said, “The result is not good enough, but it’s possible. The governor did a resit. We are not aware of that, but I think Davido, David Adeleke’s publication is inappropriate.”

He also argued that Adeleke should have responded to his Edo counterpart through official channels rather than allowing Davido to engage in the exchange.

Tugbiyele appealed directly to the singer, saying, “Davido, David Adeleke, please, as a proper Yoruba, please apologise to Governor Okpebholo.”

Davido, however, maintained his position, insisting that he had nothing to apologise for.
