President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned an emergency Federal Executive Meeting following the death of his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom following a prolonged illness. He was 82.
In a statement on Sunday, personally signed by President Tinubu, he hailed Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria, both as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected President between 2015 and 2023.
“President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures,” Tinubu said. “He led with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
According to Tinubu, the late leader “championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.”
The President extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, the extended Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State, especially the Daura Emirate.
“In this moment of national mourning, I have been in constant touch with Mrs. Aisha Buhari. We all share in this great loss,” Tinubu said.
To honour the late former President, Tinubu directed that all national flags be flown at half-staff across Nigeria for seven days, beginning Sunday. He also announced an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council to be held on Tuesday in Buhari’s honour.
Furthermore, the Federal Government will organize a state funeral “befitting of Buhari’s towering contributions to our country,” Tinubu added.
Praying for Buhari’s peaceful repose, the President said, “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.”
He concluded by urging Nigerians to let Buhari’s life inspire “courage, conviction, and selflessness” in service to the nation.
