Tinubu praises Buhari’s legacy of discipline, integrity

President Bola Tinubu has commended the late President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving behind a legacy of discipline, integrity, and commitment to public service, describing him as a model for current and future leaders.

Speaking at the launch of Buhari’s official biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu described the gathering as “a profound honour” and extended condolences to Buhari’s family.

“I extend the nation’s warmest embrace to Her Excellency, Aisha Buhari, her children, and grandchildren,” Tinubu said.

“May you find comfort in knowing that the prayers of Nigeria are with you, and that the Buhari name will continue to inspire noble service for generations.”

Highlighting Buhari’s principles, the president said, “The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent.”

Tinubu added that Buhari’s reputation for integrity and simple lifestyle demonstrated that public office is a trust, not a windfall.

Tinubu also recalled their shared political journey, noting the historic 2015 election that brought about a change in government.

“Together, we campaigned across the country, united diverse interests, and proved that Nigeria could chart a new course. Our coalition is today the fastest-growing political party in Africa.”

On Buhari’s governance style, Tinubu emphasized his commitment to national development and social welfare.

“He understood the importance of long-term thinking — constructing bridges, restoring railways, building roads, modernising airports, and renewing critical infrastructure — while ensuring sustainability. He also championed targeted social investments to support the poor and vulnerable.”

Calling on Nigerians to uphold Buhari’s ideals, Tinubu said, “A legacy gains meaning when those who follow choose to continue what has been started. President Buhari loved this country consistently, staying true to the oath he took, and even those who disagreed with him acknowledged his honesty.”

Concluding his speech, Tinubu urged unity and responsible governance, adding, “Nigeria is greater than any tribe, language, faith, or political party. One life, lived with restraint and responsibility, can inspire a nation.”

He prayed for mercy for Buhari and for blessings on the nation.

Tinubu also lauded the author of the biography for preserving Buhari’s story, saying the book “collects facts and testimonies without reducing a complex life to simple lines” and hopes it will inspire young Nigerians in their leadership aspirations.
