Tennis: Sinner breaks Djokovic record at Miami Open

Wimbledon: Djokovic defeats Sinner to reach 35th grand slam final

Italian tennis sensation, Jannik Sinner, has etched his name into the record books at the Miami Open, breaking the long-standing record for the most consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 level previously held by Novak Djokovic.

The historic feat was sealed following Sinner’s dominant straight-sets victory over Corentin Moutet at Hard Rock Stadium, where he cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win.

The triumph pushed his streak to 26 consecutive sets, surpassing Djokovic’s 2016 mark of 24, while also moving ahead of Carlos Alcaraz, who sits on 21.

Sinner officially overtook Djokovic’s record after claiming the opening set against Moutet, before extending the tally with a composed performance that further highlighted his recent dominance on the Masters circuit.

Despite the milestone, the Italian star played down its significance, stressing that his priority remains his level of play rather than chasing records.

“I’m very happy but at the same time I don’t play for this. I’m very happy to be here. It’s been a tournament I’ve also missed last year. So I’m very happy,” he said.

Reflecting on the nature of the game, he added, “Everything can happen. This sport is unpredictable. We try to keep the attention very high, as much as we can. Then we see what’s coming in the next round.

“I’m happy about today’s performance. We’re trying to improve. No day in between off, we try to rest up. Hopefully, I’ll be ready for tomorrow.”

Sinner’s remarkable run dates back to late 2025, beginning at the Paris Masters, where he defeated top players including Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime on his way to the title.

He carried that form into the Indian Wells Open, beating opponents such as Daniil Medvedev without dropping a set.

At the ongoing Miami Open, Sinner has maintained his flawless run, overcoming Damir Džumhur and Moutet to book a place in the fourth round, where he will face Alex Michelsen.

The last player to take a set off the Italian remains Tallon Griekspoor, who achieved the feat during the Shanghai Masters in October 2025.

Djokovic’s previous record, which stood for nearly a decade, featured victories over elite opponents such as Rafael Nadal and Milos Raonic.
