A 100-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was reportedly shot by suspected cultists on Wednesday, heightening tension on the campus.
The Punch reported that the incident occurred just two days after suspected members of rival cult groups engaged in a shooting confrontation on the university premises.
The Monday clash was reportedly linked to a supremacy battle between suspected members of the Vikings and Klu Klux Klan cult groups.
Details surrounding Wednesday’s shooting remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
However, a source close to the victim said the student was taken to a hospital, where doctors were working to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source, who declined to reveal the identity of the student or their own name because of the sensitivity of the matter, said, “His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen.”
It was not immediately established whether the injured student belonged to any cult group.
A video circulating online also showed the student lying on a hospital bed while his coursemates carried him into the university campus.
The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s cult-related confrontation, with its spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, saying the command was investigating the incident.
Reacting to Wednesday’s reported shooting, Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said she had seen the viral video but needed to obtain further information from the Divisional Police Officer in the area.
She had yet to provide additional details as of Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, the university management has suspended all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government Week following the latest incident.
The suspension was announced in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday by the institution’s Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie.
The management directed students to return to their classrooms on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for regular academic activities.
It warned that students who failed to attend lectures would be held responsible for their actions, while urging them to avoid activities capable of disrupting their studies or threatening peace and security on campus.
The statement read, “This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.
“Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuits and the peace of the University.”
Further details on the shooting were still being awaited at the time of filing the report.
