Super Eagles midfielder Onyedika joins Frankfurt from Club Brugge

Bundesliga side, Eintracht Frankfurt have secured the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika from Belgian champions Club Brugge, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the Nigerian’s future.

Onyedika’s departure comes after prolonged speculation, with the midfielder entering the final year of his contract at Club Brugge and showing no indication of extending his stay.

The 25-year-old had attracted interest during the January transfer window, but a move failed to materialise.

As his contract edged closer to expiration, a summer exit became the most likely outcome.

Since joining Club Brugge in 2022, Onyedika established himself as a key figure in the squad, making 183 appearances across all competitions.

During his three-year stint, he played an important role in the club’s success, helping them lift two Belgian Pro League titles, including the 2025-26 championship, as well as the Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup.

Frankfurt had seen an opening bid rejected earlier in the transfer window but returned with an improved offer that eventually persuaded Club Brugge to approve the transfer.

Football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, has confirmed that the agreement has been completed, with the Nigerian international expected to travel to Germany to undergo his medical and finalise the transfer.

The deal is valued at up to €10 million (approximately ₦15.7 billion), including performance-related bonuses, while Onyedika is set to sign a five-year contract that will keep him at the Bundesliga club until 2031.

“Raphael Onyedika to Eintracht Frankfurt, here we go! Agreement done for Nigerian midfielder to join Eintracht.

“€10m fee to Club Brugge, Onyedika prefers Eintracht despite bids also from Saudi,” Romano wrote on X.

Frankfurt overcame competition from Saudi Pro League clubs, with Al Ittihad among the sides monitoring the midfielder as they searched for a replacement for veteran midfielder Fabinho.

However, the Saudi outfit have since shifted their focus to Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi.

The Bundesliga club remained committed to completing the transfer, identifying Onyedika’s energy, defensive awareness and ball-winning ability as qualities well suited to their high-pressing system.

His contractual situation also worked in Frankfurt’s favour, as Club Brugge faced the possibility of losing the midfielder on a free transfer next summer if they failed to cash in during the current window.

With ambitions of rebuilding their midfield ahead of the new season and mounting a stronger challenge for European qualification, Frankfurt have now landed one of their priority targets.

Onyedika will become the sixth Nigerian to feature for Eintracht Frankfurt, following Henry Isaac, Jay-Jay Okocha, Nduka Anyanwu, Donald Agu and Isaac Ojigwe.

The Super Eagles midfielder is now expected to complete his medical before officially joining the Bundesliga side, where he will look to continue the impressive form that made him one of Club Brugge’s standout performers.
