Bologna stunned AC Milan 4-2 in Serie A on Wednesday as Samuel Mbangula scored a hat-trick to hand Milan manager Ruben Amorim his first league defeat, despite Alphadjo Cisse’s brace.
Mbangula opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Nadir Zortea pulled the ball back from the right flank, allowing the forward to finish from close range.
Milan responded six minutes later when Cisse capitalised on a defensive error by Bologna to level the score.
The hosts then took the lead in the 27th minute as Cisse completed his brace with an acrobatic finish following a delivery from Fikayo Tomori.
However, Milan’s advantage did not last as Bologna mounted a second-half comeback.
The visitors equalised in the 60th minute when Davide Bartesaghi inadvertently turned Juan Miranda’s free-kick into his own net.
Bologna moved ahead just two minutes later as Mbangula controlled Miranda’s pass before turning past the Milan defence to score his second goal of the evening.
The visitors continued to threaten as Milan struggled to contain their attacks.
Francesco Camarda came close to restoring parity for the hosts, but his glancing header narrowly missed the target.
Mbangula sealed his hat-trick in the 86th minute after Jens Odgaard sent a low pass across the box, allowing the former Juventus player to finish from close range and complete Bologna’s impressive victory.
Milan attempted to reduce the deficit, with Christian Pulisic testing Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski with a diving header, but the goalkeeper produced an excellent save to preserve the visitors’ two-goal advantage.
The defeat represents a significant setback for Amorim as Milan prepare for Saturday’s Derby della Madonnina.
Bologna, meanwhile, continued their encouraging away form with another impressive performance on the road.
