Road crashes drop 27% during 2026 Eid-el-Kabir, says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps has announced a significant reduction in road traffic crashes during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, recording a 27 per cent drop compared to the figures recorded in 2025.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, describing the development as one of the agency’s strongest operational performances in recent years.

According to the FRSC, the total number of road crashes during its 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol Operations fell from 191 cases in 2025 to 142 in 2026.

Ohaeri noted that the number of people involved in crashes also reduced significantly from 1,364 in 2025 to 1,064 in 2026, while injuries dropped by 25.4 per cent, declining from 576 to 430 within the period under review.

He attributed the improvement to intensified traffic enforcement, public enlightenment campaigns, strategic deployment of personnel, and improved emergency response operations across major highways.

“These impressive gains represent hundreds of lives protected and families spared the devastating consequences of road traffic crashes,” Ohaeri said.

He further explained that the success recorded during the festive period was achieved through round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-driven surveillance, traffic calming measures, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained road safety education.

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, commended personnel, Special Marshals, and partner agencies for their commitment during the operations.

“Strategic planning, sustained enforcement, and collective responsibility have continued to demonstrate that road traffic crashes can be significantly reduced on Nigerian roads,” he said.

He also appreciated motorists who complied with safety regulations during the festive season, urging continued adherence beyond public holidays.

Mohammed reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to strengthening enforcement, improving stakeholder engagement, and enhancing operational efficiency to further reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities nationwide.

He stressed that road safety remains a shared responsibility requiring consistent cooperation from all road users.
