The House of Representatives has called for the immediate investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and neighbouring Dosho communities in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, which left nine people dead and displaced several residents.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved at plenary by Mansur Manu Soro, who represents the Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency.
Presenting the motion, Soro told lawmakers that the violent confrontation resulted in significant loss of lives and destruction of property, leaving many families in distress.
“The House notes with concern the violent clash that occurred last Wednesday between farmers and herders in Lanzai and nearby Dosho communities, which led to the loss of nine lives, injuries, and the burning of about 50 residential huts and other means of livelihood,” he said.
He added that the incident had worsened humanitarian conditions in the affected areas, with women, children, and the elderly bearing the greatest burden of displacement.
“The crisis has displaced numerous families and exposed vulnerable persons, including women, children, and the elderly, to severe humanitarian hardship,” Soro added.
Lawmakers expressed concern over the recurring nature of farmers–herders clashes across the country, warning that continued violence poses a serious threat to national security, food production, and economic stability.
In its resolutions, the House urged the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to deploy adequate investigative and intelligence resources to the affected communities to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
It also directed the Department of State Services to intensify surveillance and early warning operations in the area to prevent further attacks and reprisals.
The House further called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to urgently provide relief materials, including food, shelter, medical care, and psychosocial support to victims of the violence.
It also appealed for the reconstruction of destroyed homes and community infrastructure, urging federal authorities to support long-term recovery efforts in the affected areas.
To address the root causes of recurring conflicts, lawmakers called on relevant ministries to fast-track the implementation of livestock management reforms, including grazing regulation, ranching initiatives, and community dispute resolution mechanisms.
The House mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and the North-East Development Commission to monitor compliance and report back within six weeks.
Farmers–herders clashes remain one of Nigeria’s most persistent security challenges, particularly in rural communities where competition over land and water resources often escalates into deadly violence, leading to displacement and disruption of agricultural activities.
