Police redeploy DPO over alleged ₦2.5m extortion in Delta

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Jesse Division, Ethiope East Local Government Area, following allegations of extortion involving the officer and two subordinates.

The decision followed a viral video in which a woman accused the DPO and two officers, identified as Bright and Usman, of extorting ₦2.5 million from her under the promise that her brother would be released from police custody.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the command became aware of the incident through the video circulating on social media.

“The complainant alleged that officer Bright, officer Usman and the DPO of Jesse Division extorted the sum of ₦2.5 million from her with the assurance that her brother, who was in custody, would regain his freedom,” Edafe said.

Providing background to the case, the police spokesman explained that on January 1, 2026, some suspects were arrested by the youth leader of Jesse community and taken to the police station. Among them was the complainant’s younger brother, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, aged 20.

“The arrest followed a confession by another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who claimed he sold a firearm to Israel Onojeruo,” Edafe said.

“The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit for further investigation.”
Edafe noted that despite the ongoing investigation, the Commissioner of Police acted swiftly on the extortion allegations.

According to the statement, the DPO’s redeployment also followed “a series of complaints bordering on extortion and unprofessional conduct” from various quarters.

The Commissioner of Police assured the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
