Police probe Lagos officer over alleged extortion, intimidation

The Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, has launched a probe into allegations of extortion, intimidation, and unprofessional behaviour made against one of its officers by a Lagos-based couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chidi Mitchell Onyiah.

The investigation followed a petition addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by the couple through their lawyer, Savn Daniel of Otung, Okoh and Co. Chambers.

In the petition, the Onyiahs recounted that their ordeal began in July 2023 after purchasing a property located at 2 Salami Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, from one Mr. Sulaiman Ojora.

They noted that the transaction was properly documented, recorded on video, and sealed with a deed of assignment signed by all parties involved.

According to the couple, their troubles began soon after the sale when a politician allegedly expressed interest in the same property.

Despite the purchase being facilitated by a certified agent and witnessed by others, they claimed they began receiving threats challenging their ownership.

The matter was eventually reported to the FCID Annex, where an officer was assigned to investigate.

However, the Onyiahs alleged that instead of addressing the dispute impartially, the officer began harassing and intimidating them, even going as far as detaining an individual who issued them a conveyance letter.

Their lawyer further claimed that the intimidation escalated, with the couple being threatened with false accusations linking them to the death of a party involved in the property issue.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the FCID Annex, ASP Aminat Mayegun, confirmed awareness of the allegations and said she had spoken to the officer concerned, who denied any misconduct.

“She said the couple also petitioned him at the X-Squad and that he gave his statement, but they did not show up. However, we are willing to hear from all sides to ensure fairness. If any officer is found guilty of misconduct, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken,” she said.

ASP Mayegun emphasized that the department remains committed to justice and to upholding the Inspector-General’s directive on professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
