Police order disciplinary action against officer viral threat to kill

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned a viral video showing a police officer allegedly issuing threats to citizens filming police operations and has ordered immediate disciplinary action against him.

In the footage, ASP Newton Isokpehi was seen reacting angrily to individuals recording officers on duty, a conduct the Force says falls far below professional standards.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed that the officer has been identified and subjected to disciplinary processes.

Describing the behaviour as unacceptable, the Force stressed that such actions contradict ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and rebuilding public trust in policing.

“The conduct displayed in that video is entirely unprofessional and does not reflect the values or ethics of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read. “We are committed to ensuring that officers uphold the highest standards in their engagement with the public.”

The statement also reaffirmed the rights of citizens to document police activities carried out in public spaces, provided such actions do not obstruct lawful duties or compromise operational safety.

It further quoted the Force as saying, “Members of the public are permitted to lawfully record police officers in the discharge of their duties. Any attempt to intimidate or harass citizens for doing so will not be tolerated.”

The Inspector-General of Police was referenced as maintaining that transparency remains central to modern policing, adding that officers must avoid actions that could be perceived as intimidation or abuse of authority.

The officer involved has since been summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters, where internal disciplinary procedures have begun.

The Force added that the outcome of the process will be communicated after review.

Reiterating its stance, the Police said it “remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and restoring public confidence through responsible policing.”
