Police constable returns N2.6m mistakenly sent to account in Borno

A police constable in Borno State, Muhammad Alhaji Mohammad, has returned N2.6 million mistakenly transferred into his bank account in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The officer said his decision to refund the money was motivated by a desire to help change the negative perception of the Nigeria Police.

One Bello Jafar, in a Facebook post on Friday, praised the constable for what he described as “an uncommon display of honesty and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).”

Jafar wrote, “I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of the United Bank of Africa (UBA) and a police officer currently serving in Borno State with exceptional integrity.”

On the mistaken transfer of N2.6 million into Muhammad’s account, he added, “Muhammad received the money in an error from a Moniepoint customer, but took an immediate step to ensure that it was returned to the rightful owner.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, SP Nahum Daso, said in a telephone interview on Monday in Maiduguri, “The State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, had already invited Muhammad for a brief meeting.”

Daso further explained that the constable, who works at the Insurance Office of the command, received the credit alert on Thursday despite not expecting any such payment.

“When the police constable received the credit bank alert on his phone last Thursday, he said he knew he was not expecting any particular money,” the spokesperson stated.
