Police arrest wanted Beninese fugitive in Ogun

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a notorious fugitive from the Benin Republic, Sunday Kotin, and extradited him to Cotonou after a covert operation in Ogun State.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that Kotin had been on the wanted list for a string of transnational crimes.

“Kotin was declared wanted for offences ranging from inter-border armed banditry, smuggling of firearms and ammunition, cattle rustling, to drug trafficking,” Hundeyin said.

“Acting with precision and working on credible intelligence, operatives of the NPF National Central Bureau of Interpol Nigeria carried out a discreet operation that led to his arrest in Idi Iroko Town, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.”

The fugitive, according to the police, was apprehended following a request from Interpol Benin Republic, after seven members of his syndicate already facing trial in Cotonou linked him to the crimes.

Hundeyin explained that Kotin was thoroughly interrogated over his alleged involvement in cross-border crimes before being handed over to Interpol officials in Benin.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the officers who carried out the arrest, stressing that Nigeria would never serve as a refuge for international criminals.

“The Nigeria Police Force is resolutely committed to safeguarding the sovereignty of Nigeria, upholding the rule of law, and deepening cooperation with international law enforcement partners,” Egbetokun said.

“Nigeria will never serve as a safe haven for fugitives or purveyors of crime, no matter how highly placed or deeply networked.”

He further assured citizens and the international community that the police remain unwavering in their mission.

“We will relentlessly pursue criminals, strengthen our global partnerships, and continue to ensure peace, security, and justice for all,” the IGP added.
