Northwest varsity expels 34 students over exam malpractice

No fewer than 34 students have been expelled by Northwest University, Kano, after they were found guilty of examination malpractice.

The disciplinary action was approved by the university’s Senate during its 66th statutory meeting held on June 17 and 18, 2026, following recommendations from the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Head of the university’s Public Relations Unit, Abubakar Ibrahim, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr Isyaku Adamu.

According to the statement, the sanctions stemmed from cases arising during the second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session.

“The Senate of the university, at its 66th statutory meeting held on Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18, 2026, approved the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct arising from the Second Semester 2024/2025 Examination,” the statement said.

It added that the penalties were imposed in line with the institution’s examination regulations as outlined in the Students’ Handbook.
Beyond the expulsions, the Senate also approved the rustication of 18 students for various examination-related offences, while 22 others received warning letters.

The university further disclosed that one student, Rukayya Ahmad Zukuri, was cleared after a review of her case found no basis for disciplinary action.
