Plateau varsity sanctions 76 students over exam malpractice

Plateau State University, Bokkos, has disciplined 76 students caught engaging in examination malpractice during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Masara Kim, said the sanctions were approved by the university Senate during its 102nd regular meeting, chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moses Galadima.

“The committee investigated 76 students apprehended during the examinations for offences including possession of mobile phones in examination halls, carrying written notes, and inscribing answers on body parts,” Kim stated.

He added, “Following deliberations, the Senate approved sanctions in line with the provisions of the students’ handbook. These include rustication for one academic session, compulsory carryover of affected courses, and in severe cases, outright expulsion.”

Kim also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic integrity, noting that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shedrach Best, has consistently emphasised the importance of discipline and moral values among students.

The statement highlighted that the university’s decision is part of a broader effort to uphold strict standards of conduct, reflecting a zero-tolerance policy for examination misconduct.
Several other Nigerian universities have recently taken similar measures.

In February, the University of Abuja expelled 28 students for offences including exam malpractice, cultism, and result falsification.

Earlier, Bayero University Kano expelled 62 students and rusticated 17 others for examination-related misconduct.

“The actions taken by Plateau University reinforce the message that integrity in academic performance is non-negotiable,” Kim said.
