NAPTIP condemns Delta festival assaults, backs arrests

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has condemned the assault of women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the incident as a serious violation of human rights.

The agency’s reaction follows widespread outrage over videos showing young women being attacked during the ‘Alue-Do’ festival held in the Isoko North Local Government Area. The footage, which circulated online, captured victims being harassed and publicly humiliated by groups of youths.

In a statement issued on Saturday, NAPTIP denounced the incident and called for justice for the victims.

“NAPTIP strongly condemns the barbaric assaults and harassment against women and girls during the festival in Ozoro. These acts are clear violations of human dignity and represent another form of gender-based violence,” the agency stated.

The agency also commended the Nigeria Police Force for taking swift action following the incident.

“We commend the police in Delta State for their prompt response and the arrest of suspects, including key organisers and a community leader,” the statement added.

NAPTIP further pledged its support for ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We will continue to support all actions aimed at securing justice for the victims and preventing a recurrence of such crimes,” it said.

The Delta State Government had earlier condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with societal values.

The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, emphasised that cultural activities must not be used as a cover for criminal acts.

“No cultural gathering should serve as a platform for harassment or assault. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable,” Aniagwu said.

Meanwhile, the police confirmed the arrest of several suspects, including a community head identified as Omorede Sunday and other organisers of the event.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

“The community head and four other suspects have been arrested and a full investigation is ongoing. All those found culpable will be brought to justice,” Edafe said.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as calls grow louder for stricter measures to protect women and ensure accountability for acts of violence during public events.
