Police arrest 11 more suspects over Delta festival assault

The Delta State Government has confirmed the arrest of 11 additional suspects linked to the sexual assault of women during a recent community festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

In a statement released on Saturday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the government described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the incident, which occurred in Oramudu Quarters.

According to the statement, the arrests were carried out following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, who mandated a thorough probe into the disturbing reports.

“The police have made notable progress in the investigation, leading to the arrest of eleven additional suspects after a careful review of video footage and intelligence gathering,” the statement read.

Authorities identified some of the suspects as Samson Atukpodo, Steven Ovie, Ugbevo Samson, Afoke Akporobaro, and Evidence Oguname, alongside six others whose identities were not immediately disclosed.

The government stressed that the acts of violence were perpetrated by criminal elements who took advantage of the festival atmosphere, distancing the incident from any legitimate cultural practice.

“These actions do not reflect our cultural values. They were carried out by individuals who exploited the gathering to commit heinous crimes,” the statement added.

The Delta State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring all perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.
