Marseille draw Toulouse, blow chance to top Ligue 1 after PSG defeat at Monaco

Marseille squandered a golden opportunity to leapfrog Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Ligue 1 after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Toulouse on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, PSG suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Monaco, their second league loss in 14 matches this season, matching their total from the whole of last campaign. Despite the setback, the champions remain one point clear of Marseille. Lens, however, could climb to the summit on Sunday with a win at Angers.

The Velodrome was stunned when Brazilian winger Emersonn cut in from the right and finished superbly to give Toulouse the lead. Moments before halftime, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came close to leveling for Marseille, only to see his effort cleared off the line.

The hosts eventually broke through when Igor Paixao latched onto a pinpoint long pass from Bilal Nadir, rounded the goalkeeper, and slotted home. They turned the game around in the 74th minute when Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg nodded in an Aubameyang cross from close range.

But Marseille’s late lapse proved costly, as substitute Santiago Hidalgo rose to head in a long throw-in deep into injury time.

Minamino punishes PSG

Takumi Minamino delivered the decisive blow for Monaco, scoring midway through the second half against a lackluster PSG.
“It’s hard to be consistent when you keep making individual mistakes. This was our worst performance of the season,” coach Luis Enrique lamented. “They deserved the win. It was a very bad night for us.”

Monaco’s Lamine Camara was lucky to escape with only a yellow early on after a reckless challenge that caught goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier’s ankle. Chevalier recovered to deny Minamino with a strong one-handed save later in the half.

PSG, frequently carved open on the counter, were punished in the 69th minute when Minamino expertly controlled Aleksandr Golovin’s delivery from the left and clipped the ball past Chevalier.

Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer was later dismissed in the 80th minute after VAR spotted him shoving a PSG player. Paul Pogba made a brief appearance off the bench for Monaco in the closing minutes.

Elsewhere, Paris FC were held to a 1-1 home draw by bottom-placed Auxerre.
