A 19-year-old Nigerian-born man, Fawaz Oyedeji, has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in the United Kingdom for attempting to rob a Porsche Cayenne owner at gunpoint.
Oyedeji, of Leonard Robbins Path, Greenwich, was sentenced on Thursday at the Inner London Crown Court after being found guilty of attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.
The incident occurred on March 18, 2025, when Oyedeji arranged to meet the vehicle owner at their residence in Southwark after seeing an online advertisement for the £72,500 Porsche Cayenne.
He reportedly posed as a prospective buyer before attempting to steal the vehicle.
According to the police, the victim showed Oyedeji the car before both sat in the front seats to discuss the proposed sale. Oyedeji then produced what appeared to be a firearm, pointed it at the owner and demanded the keys. However, the victim resisted, forcing the suspect to flee without the vehicle.
The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after the victim called 999.
Detectives relied on CCTV footage, mobile phone data, dashcam recordings and forensic evidence to identify Oyedeji.
Investigators established that the phone used to arrange the meeting was linked to him and had been near his residence and the scene of the attempted robbery.
Oyedeji was arrested at his home on March 20, less than 38 hours after the incident.
Police also recovered clothing that matched what he wore during the offence. A jury at the Inner London Crown Court unanimously convicted him on August 12 after deliberating for just 26 minutes following his trial.
Detective Alex Long, who led the investigation, said, “The victim showed immense courage by refusing to hand over his keys despite being threatened with what appeared to be a genuine firearm.
“Thanks to his support throughout the investigation and the diligence of officers who gathered CCTV, digital and forensic evidence, we were able to build a compelling case that led to Oyedeji’s conviction and sentence.
“Anyone buying or selling a vehicle privately should take sensible precautions. If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and leave. Always call 999 in an emergency. We remain committed to tackling robbery and violent crime across London and bringing offenders to justice.”
