Lyon shock PSG 2-1, blow Ligue 1 title race open

Paris-Saint-Germain were stunned on home soil as Olympique Lyonnais claimed a vital 2-1 victory at the Parc des Princes, tightening the Ligue 1 title race and boosting their own Champions League ambitions.

Lyon struck early through Endrick and Afonso Moreira, both finding the net within the opening 18 minutes to hand the visitors a commanding lead. It marked Lyon’s first win over PSG since April 2023.

PSG, under Luis Enrique, struggled to find rhythm, with Gonçalo Ramos seeing a first-half penalty saved by Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif.

Despite late pressure, the hosts only managed a consolation deep into stoppage time when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled home a fine effort from the edge of the box, but it proved too little, too late.

The defeat leaves PSG just one point ahead of second-placed Lens, though they still have a game in hand, with a crucial clash between the two sides looming later in the season.

Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon climb from sixth to third, moving into the final Champions League qualification spot with six matches remaining.

Lyon’s fast start set the tone, as Endrick latched onto a loose ball to fire in off the post before turning provider, helping launch a swift counter that allowed Moreira to double the advantage after racing clear from midfield.

PSG threatened sporadically, with Bradley Barcola denied by a crucial block from Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who later conceded a penalty that Ramos failed to convert.

Substitutes Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé added urgency in the second half, with the latter striking the crossbar, but Lyon’s disciplined defending held firm for most of the contest.

Kvaratskhelia’s late strike ensured PSG avoided a complete blank, but Lyon’s clinical display ultimately sealed a famous win in Paris.
