Lens thrash Toulouse 3-0, maintain Ligue 1 top spot

Wesley Saïd, Adrien Thomasson and Ismaelo Ganiou were all on target as Lens stretched their impressive Ligue 1 winning streak to seven matches with a 3-0 victory over Toulouse, maintaining their grip on top spot.

The hosts started brightly at Stadium de Toulouse, testing Lens early, but the contest swung decisively in the visitors’ favour after Emersonn was shown a straight red card midway through the first half.

Lens made their numerical advantage count after the break, with Saïd opening the scoring before Thomasson and Ganiou sealed a commanding win.

Toulouse threatened inside the opening minute when Rasmus Nicolaisen forced a save from Robin Risser, and Emersonn later went close as the home side showed early intent.

However, their momentum evaporated in the 22nd minute when Emersonn was dismissed for a late challenge on Odsonne Édouard near the halfway line, prompting a tactical reshuffle from head coach Carlos Martinez.

Lens began to control proceedings and finally broke the deadlock in the 57th minute after Alexis Vossah failed to deal with a loose ball in his own penalty area.

Saïd pounced on the error, curling a composed finish beyond Guillaume Restes into the far corner.

The league leaders dominated the second half, enjoying 71% possession, and captain Thomasson ensured there would be no late drama.

He doubled the lead after reacting quickest to a rebound in the closing stages before turning provider in stoppage time, setting up Ganiou for a thunderous strike at the near post.

Lens’ victory came against a Toulouse side that had won their previous two league outings, though the first-half red card proved pivotal.

The visitors registered 16 shots and an expected goals tally of 1.53, comfortably outdoing Toulouse’s 0.66 from eight attempts.

Before kick-off, Thomasson had urged his teammates to remain focused on each match rather than talk of a title push, and he led by example.

The midfielder won all three of his tackles, reclaimed possession five times, completed 26 passes in the final third, created two chances and capped his performance with a goal.

The result extends Lens’ winning run in Ligue 1 to seven consecutive games — their joint-longest streak in the 21st century, matching the run achieved during the 2022–23 season under Franck Haise.
