Lagos announces 12-week traffic diversion on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

The Lagos State Government has unveiled a 12-week traffic diversion plan ahead of the reconstruction of a section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The affected stretch covers the inbound Lagos carriageway between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop. The project, which will be executed by the Federal Ministry of Works, is scheduled to run from March 7 to May 30, 2026.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced that the main Lagos-bound carriageway from Super Bus-Stop to Ilepo Bus-Stop will be completely closed during the construction period.

Osiyemi said, “The main carriageway inbound Lagos between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop will be closed to vehicular movement for the duration of the reconstruction.”

He advised motorists travelling towards Lagos or Oshodi from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate to use designated alternative routes.

“Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate heading to Lagos/Oshodi will be diverted into the BRT corridor at Super Bus-Stop and exit at Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) to continue their journeys,” he explained.

He added that commuters may also take alternative inner roads. “Another option is to go through Ekoro Road to Old Otta Road via Alira Street, link Abeokuta Street and rejoin at Pleasure Bus-Stop,” he said.

Osiyemi further noted that drivers could use the Abule Egba Underbridge to connect to Agege and proceed to their intended destinations.

According to him, traffic on the opposite carriageway heading towards Abeokuta will remain open throughout the reconstruction.

“To manage emergencies, tow trucks will be stationed within the BRT corridor to promptly remove broken-down vehicles and minimise disruptions,” the commissioner stated.

The government urged road users to exercise patience, comply with traffic signs and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
