La Liga: Valencia, Celta Vigo play goalless draw

Valencia and Celta Vigo played out a goalless draw at Mestalla on Saturday as both sides settled for a point in a tightly contested La Liga encounter.

Celta enjoyed more possession and controlled large portions of the match, but Valencia’s disciplined defensive setup prevented the visitors from turning their dominance into goals.

Celta finished with 56 per cent possession and completed 552 accurate passes, compared with Valencia’s 44 per cent and 427 passes.

However, Valencia edged the visitors 8-7 in total shots, while Celta managed three efforts on target against the hosts’ two.

The visitors also had a slight advantage in expected goals, recording 0.66 compared with Valencia’s 0.58.

Despite their territorial control, Celta created only one big chance throughout the game and failed to take it.

Valencia, operating with a five-man defence, relied on strong tackling, clearances and physical duels to keep Celta at bay.

They won 51 per cent of their duels and made 29 clearances, while goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski produced three saves to preserve the clean sheet.

César Tárrega was particularly impressive at the heart of Valencia’s defence and was named Player of the Match.

The centre-back completed 54 of his 59 passes, won seven duels and made five successful tackles, four clearances and an interception.

His composure and positioning helped Valencia contain Celta’s attacking threat.

Guido Rodríguez and Pepelu also played important roles in protecting the defence, with the former earning a 7.5 rating and the latter completing 76 of 83 passes while making eight clearances.

Celta’s Marcos Alonso was among their standout performers, registering 129 touches, 97 completed passes from 106 attempts, seven clearances and four interceptions.

However, Celta struggled to provide a decisive final ball, particularly from wide areas.

They completed just one of 14 crosses, while Valencia managed two from 15 attempts.

Neither side could find a breakthrough despite Celta’s sustained possession after the interval, leaving the points shared at Mestalla.

The result highlights Valencia’s defensive organisation, while Celta will feel they need greater attacking efficiency if their possession and territorial dominance are to produce victories.
