La Liga: Celta Vigo beat Alavés 2-1

Celta Vigo secured a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés in their LaLiga encounter at Balaídos on Sunday, with Javi Rodríguez delivering a decisive performance to help the hosts claim all three points.

Rodríguez contributed a goal and an assist as Celta capitalised on their chances to overcome an Alavés side that created more opportunities but struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Ferrán Jutglà opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before Rodríguez doubled the hosts’ advantage 18 minutes later.

Hugo Novoa pulled one back for Alavés in the closing stages, but Celta held on to secure the win.

Despite enjoying 52 per cent possession, Alavés were unable to make their attacking pressure count.

The visitors registered 20 shots, compared with Celta’s six, and managed nine attempts on target against the hosts’ three.

However, Celta goalkeeper Ionuț Radu produced an outstanding display, making eight saves to frustrate the visitors and preserve his side’s advantage.

After a goalless first half, Celta broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second period.

Rodríguez provided the assist for Jutglà, who finished with his left foot to put the home side ahead.

Alavés continued to push forward, but Celta struck again in the 71st minute.

Substitute Iago Aspas made an immediate impact after coming on, setting up Rodríguez, who calmly fired a right-footed effort into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.

The visitors refused to surrender and reduced the deficit three minutes from time through Novoa.

His goal, created by Nahuel Tenaglia and Mariano Díaz, gave Alavés renewed hope of salvaging a result.

Alavés applied further pressure in the closing minutes, but Celta’s defence stood firm to prevent an equaliser.

Although the visitors recorded more shots, corners and penalty-area touches, Celta proved more effective in front of goal and defended resolutely when required.

Rodríguez was the standout performer, earning a Sofascore rating of 9.1 after scoring once and providing an assist.

He also completed 55 of his 67 passes, made eight clearances and won five of seven duels.

Radu was another key contributor, with his eight saves playing a crucial role in ensuring Celta maintained their lead.

The victory highlighted Celta’s ability to make the most of their opportunities, while Alavés were left to rue their inability to turn their attacking superiority into a more favourable result.
