Kano probes two boarding school students’ death

The Kano State Government has launched an investigation into the shocking deaths of two students at Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, following reports of a violent attack by fellow students using locally-made metal weapons known as “Gwale-Gwale.”

The victims, identified as Hamza Tofawa and Umar Dungurawa, were allegedly assaulted by some of their colleagues in what has been described as a disciplinary punishment gone too far.

The PUNCH reported that the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, through a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, assured the public of a thorough and impartial probe into the incident.

Speaking on behalf of the commissioner, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Muhammad, emphasized the government’s commitment to justice and transparency in the matter.

“It was reported that the brutal act followed a decision taken by some senior students to treat the deceased as punishment for allegedly committing an offence,” he said.

Following a visit to the school, the Permanent Secretary urged students to refrain from acts of vigilante justice and instead report issues to school authorities.

“You should avoid taking law into your hands but rather make sure you report any matter of concern to the school authority for appropriate action,” he advised.

He also offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the state government and its citizens.

Also speaking on the tragic development, the Director of Secondary Schools, Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, condemned the act, stressing that students must act responsibly and within the bounds of the law.

“Kano State Government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident,” he stated.
