Kano gov justifies choice of Garo as deputy

Governor Abba Yusuf has defended the appointment of Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, saying the decision was based on merit, experience, and his ability to contribute meaningfully to governance.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf made the remarks during the 39th Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano.

According to the governor, the selection process involved a careful review of several candidates before settling for Garo.

“We considered a number of individuals, examining their track records, competence, and past contributions to the state. Murtala Sule Garo stood out as a seasoned politician capable of adding value to our administration,” Yusuf said.

Garo’s nomination followed the resignation of the former deputy governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo. His name was subsequently forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly, where lawmakers confirmed him after screening.

Governor Yusuf commended the Assembly, led by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, for what he described as a swift and efficient confirmation process.

“I appreciate the House of Assembly for their prompt action in screening and confirming the nominee. This demonstrates their commitment to ensuring continuity in governance,” he added.

The governor also disclosed that arrangements were underway for Garo’s swearing-in and called on residents and stakeholders to support the incoming deputy governor in delivering on the administration’s mandate.

During the same meeting, Yusuf congratulated the newly appointed Head of Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, acknowledging her contributions to the civil service.

“Her dedication and experience, especially in her previous roles as Director and Permanent Secretary, have been invaluable. I urge civil servants to give her the necessary support to succeed,” the governor stated.

The meeting also featured the presentation of 39 awards to the governor by different organisations in recognition of his administration’s performance. One of the gestures included a ₦30,000 gift from a primary school teacher, who commended Yusuf’s efforts in improving the education sector.
