The Kano State Government has commenced preparations to organize a mass wedding ceremony involving no fewer than 2,000 couples under its ongoing marriage support initiative.
According to The PUNCH, the Deputy Commander-General of the State Hisba Board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, said the directive came from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of efforts to assist intending couples, especially widows, divorcees, and less privileged women.
“We have received the directive from the state government to start arrangements for another round of mass weddings involving about 2,000 couples,” Sheikh Aminudeen said. “The process will soon begin to ensure everything goes smoothly.”
He explained that the exercise would follow due procedures, including mandatory medical screenings for all intending couples.
The tests will cover HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use, among others.
“Every participant must register and undergo medical examinations. It’s a compulsory part of the process,” he emphasized.
“Anyone who fails to comply with the medical screening will not be allowed to take part in the programme.”
The mass wedding scheme, which was reintroduced by Governor Yusuf’s administration, seeks to promote moral values and reduce social vices such as prostitution. It also aims to support families unable to bear the financial burden of traditional wedding expenses.
According to the Hisba Board, the initiative has continued to receive positive responses from residents, especially those who view it as a relief for struggling households and a means to encourage legal and responsible unions in society.
