Iran defies US, holds firm on nuclear program

Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, emphasized Tehran’s unwavering stance on its nuclear program after United States envoy Steve Witkoff noted that President Donald Trump was puzzled by Iran’s refusal to yield to American pressure.

“Because we are IRANIAN,” Araghchi wrote, underlining a national ethos of pride, sovereignty, and historical weight.

The statement reflects more than diplomatic rhetoric. For Iran, nuclear technology is a cornerstone of identity and independence.

With a 2,500-year-old civilization and a population of 92 million, Tehran views itself as a major power, not a state to be coerced. Its leaders argue that uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes is a right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the US doubts the program’s purely civilian intent.

Recent indirect talks mediated by Oman reportedly made some progress, yet Iran has refused to abandon enrichment or expand discussions to include its missile program or regional activities.

The nuclear program is more than science, it is proof of Iran’s ability to advance technologically under pressure.

“Relinquishing the nuclear program would not be viewed merely as a policy concession; it would be perceived domestically as surrendering one of the regime’s foundational achievements,” said Danny Citrinowicz of the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.

Tehran’s strategy balances deterrence and pragmatism. Enrichment provides leverage to prevent coercion and attack, as demonstrated after US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and subsequent Israeli strikes in June 2025.

Economically, Iran sees potential gains in sanctions relief, offering the Trump administration an opportunity to frame a deal as a win.

Araghchi’s declaration captures the essence of Iran’s approach: the nuclear program is not just policy, it is national pride, sovereignty, and strategic power. For Tehran, giving in is not an option.
