The Independent National Electoral Commission has convened a reconciliation meeting between the two rival factions of the Peoples Democratic Party at its headquarters in Abuja, as efforts intensify to resolve the party’s lingering leadership crisis.
According to Vanguard, the closed-door engagement, which is currently ongoing, brings together representatives of the faction led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, and the group backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed.
The Turaki-led delegation arrived with key members of its National Working Committee, officials of the party secretariat, and former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, who is regarded as a prominent elder within the PDP.
On the other side, Abdulrahman Mohammed was accompanied by members of his national caretaker committee, including the committee’s secretary and former National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Sam Anyanwu.
INEC’s intervention is aimed at addressing internal disputes within the opposition party, particularly those bordering on leadership legitimacy, control of party structures, and compliance with electoral laws and regulations.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the PDP’s internal stability ahead of future electoral activities, as the commission continues to stress the need for political parties to resolve disputes through lawful and democratic means.
