ICYMI: Police arrest Delta community head, others over festival ‘sexual assault’

Investigative people with suspicious wealth, Delta PPRO tells cops

The Delta State Police Command has arrested several suspects in connection with the alleged sexual molestation of women during a local festival in the Ozoro area of Delta State, an incident that has triggered widespread outrage after a disturbing video surfaced online.

A viral clip circulated widely on Friday across social media platforms showing scenes of alleged sexual assault involving multiple women during the community event.

In the footage, groups of young men were seen reportedly attacking women in public, tearing their clothing, and subjecting them to various forms of abuse.

The incident was said to have occurred on Thursday, March 19, during the community’s annual celebration. Reports indicate that during the festival, women are traditionally expected to remain indoors, with claims that any female found outside during the period could be harassed by participants.

Some accounts further alleged that rape may have occurred during the chaos; however, these claims have not been officially confirmed by authorities.

According to the police, arrests have been made in connection with the incident, though there appears to be some inconsistency in the number of suspects reported.

Initial reports suggested six suspects were taken into custody.

Speaking on the development, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the incident as “alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing.”

In a statement on his X page on Friday, Edafe revealed that the command has arrested the Ozoro community head and the organizer of the festival along with four suspects in connection with the incident.

He wrote, “The community head and chief organizer of the event, Chief Omorede Sunday, and four other suspects from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro have been arrested.

“The CP has ordered that they should be transferred to the state CID with immediate effect.

“The CP vows that anyone involved will be arrested and brought to justice.
