Foreign affairs minister Yusuf Tuggar resigns

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stepped down from his position to focus on his ambition to contest the governorship election in Bauchi State.

The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said, “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.”

Tuggar’s decision follows earlier indications that some members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet intending to participate in upcoming elections would relinquish their appointments in line with electoral guidelines.

His Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had previously disclosed the minister’s political intention, stating, “The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State.”

Speaking further on the timing of the resignation, Abdulkadir noted that the minister would act in accordance with the electoral timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“There is a timetable that stipulates all the rules and regulations for running; he will adhere to this,” he said.

Tuggar, who hails from Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, has previously contested for the state’s top office. His resignation is expected to reshape the political landscape in the state ahead of the next election cycle.
