Adelabu resigns as power minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his position to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of Oyo State.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu stated that his exit would take effect from April 30, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition in the ministry.

“I write with a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude to formally tender my resignation as the Honourable Minister of Power,” Adelabu said.

“This resignation is to take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities.”

The former minister expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a privilege and a platform to contribute to national development.

“Your Excellency, I remain sincerely grateful for the confidence reposed in me to serve our great nation. It has been a rare honour to play a role in advancing reforms in the power sector,” he said.

Adelabu explained that his decision was driven by his intention to focus fully on contesting the Oyo State governorship election, in compliance with the provisions of the amended electoral law.

“My decision to step down is informed by my intention to fully pursue my gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State,” he stated.

“In line with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act, it is necessary for political office holders to resign before participating in elections.”

He noted that his governorship aspiration dates back several years, recalling that he previously left his role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 to contest the same position.

Adelabu’s resignation is expected to reshape the political landscape in Oyo State ahead of the next election cycle, as he prepares to re-enter the race for the governorship seat.
