Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, marking a major political shake-up in the state.
The development was confirmed in a Facebook post by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, who disclosed that the governor’s resignation was accompanied by that of the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP lawmakers in the state legislature.
Diri’s exit puts to rest months of speculation about his alleged plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, his next political move remains unclear, as Alabrah did not specify which party the governor intends to join.
Sources within Government House, Yenagoa, told The Punch that the announcement was made during Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting. It was also gathered that Governor Diri has submitted his resignation letter to the PDP leadership.
There are reports that members of the State Executive Council have also stepped down in solidarity with the governor.
When contacted, Alabrah declined to comment further, saying, “I cannot talk now.” Efforts to reach the state PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful, as his calls were not answered.
Diri’s resignation comes just a day after reports emerged of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, defecting to the APC, signaling growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
