The Federal Government has raised the alarm over possible flooding in 15 states and at least 69 communities across the country, following forecasts of heavy rainfall between September 24 and 28, 2025.
The warning was issued on Wednesday by the Federal Ministry of Environment through its National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW Centre).
The notice was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.
According to the advisory, states expected to be affected include Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara.
“Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in these states within the next four days. This may trigger flooding in the identified communities and their environs,” Bokani stated.
He urged state governments, emergency responders, and residents in the listed areas to brace up and take precautionary steps.
“The ministry calls on stakeholders to take note of this warning, prepare adequately, and ensure preventive actions are taken to reduce the risk of casualties and damage,” he said.
Flooding has remained a persistent challenge in Nigeria, often leading to loss of lives, displacement of families, and destruction of infrastructure.
The National Emergency Management Agency, recently reported that as of September 20, no fewer than 232 persons had died and 121,224 others displaced by flooding in parts of the country this year.
At least 339,658 people have been affected nationwide, while 681 sustained injuries.
