Ex-UK cop found guilty of historic sexual abuse

Serial rapist and former Metropolitan Police officer David Carrick has been found guilty in the United Kingdom of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl and a former partner.

The 50-year-old, who is already serving a life sentence, was convicted of molesting the girl in the late 1980s and raping the woman during a relationship more than 20 years later.

Jurors at London’s Old Bailey found him guilty of nine offences, with sentencing scheduled for Thursday.

Carrick, from Stevenage, is already serving a minimum term of 32 years in prison after admitting 71 offences of sexual violence spanning 17 years.

Wearing a suit and tie, Carrick appeared in the dock flanked by four prison officers. He shook his head repeatedly as the verdicts were announced.

The jury deliberated for five hours before unanimously convicting him of:

Five counts of indecent assault against a girl under 16 between April 1989 and August 1990

Two counts of rape against a woman, once between December 2014 and April 2016, and again between January and December 2019

Lawyer Shilpa Shah, who led both prosecutions by the Crown Prosecution Service against Carrick, commented on the latest verdict:

“It was clear from the compelling testimonies given by these women that they had endured relentless abuse to which they did not consent,” she said.

“One victim was a child when she was indecently assaulted and another was sexually abused by him while he served as a senior police officer.

“These factors made it vital to prosecute him a second time – not only because of the severity of the crimes and the public interest arising from him being a police officer when he committed some of them, but also to show the full extent of his offending which spanned decades.”

Hertfordshire Police praised the victims for their courage and encouraged others who may have suffered abuse to come forward.

During the trial, jurors heard that Carrick abused the young girl for approximately 18 months before she confided in her mother.

He later admitted to the abuse in a letter recovered from his medical records, signed simply “Dave.”

The court also heard from his ex-partner, who described a “toxic relationship” in which she was repeatedly raped. In a police interview played in court, she said Carrick had strangled her, called her abusive names, and thrown her out of the house. She added, “Our relationship was quite traumatising – I wish I’d never met him.”

Carrick chose not to give evidence in the current Old Bailey trial. He denied the new charges, despite having admitted previous offences during court appearances in 2022 and 2023. Prosecutor Tom Little KC described Carrick’s silence in the dock as “deafening.”

Despite his written confession, Carrick dismissed the allegations of child abuse, claiming the girl had lied.

Regarding his ex-partner, he insisted in an interview at Full Sutton prison that the sexual encounters were consensual and accused her of being influenced by the MeToo movement.

The sentencing hearing is set to begin on Thursday morning.
