Morgan Rogers produced a brilliant brace, capped by a sensational free-kick winner, as Aston Villa overturned a deficit to defeat Leeds United 2-1 in Sunday’s Premier League clash.
Fresh off international duty with England, where he has impressively kept Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham on the bench, Rogers reminded everyone why he’s trusted at that level.
The midfielder levelled the score three minutes into the second half, guiding home Donyell Malen’s cross with a composed finish.
He then delivered the moment of the match in the 75th minute, bending a superb free kick over the Leeds wall and into the top corner to complete Villa’s comeback.
Leeds had earlier ignited a charged Elland Road atmosphere when Lukas Nmecha forced the ball in from close range after Ezri Konsa’s goal-line clearance from Anton Stach’s header. VAR checked for interference on goalkeeper Emi Martinez, but the goal stood.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin briefly thought he’d rescued a point for Leeds, only for his late strike to be disallowed for handball.
The victory continues Villa’s resurgence, their sixth win in seven league outings, after failing to win any of their opening five matches. The result lifts Unai Emery’s side into fourth place.
