The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has rejected the Ekiti State Police Command’s description of the incident involving him and his associates in Ado-Ekiti as an altercation.
Sowore, who sustained injuries during the incident, insisted that he and his associates were violently attacked, contrary to the police account that he had a disagreement with some individuals at a restaurant.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, the activist faulted the police for allegedly downplaying the incident despite the state Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, visiting the scene.
“There was no altercation! We were attacked!” Sowore declared.
He further alleged that the police commissioner was aware of the extent of the violence and the injuries sustained by those involved but that the command subsequently described his injuries as minor.
“The Commissioner saw the injuries, witnessed the aftermath of the violence, and was fully aware of the seriousness of what happened. Yet his command has chosen to trivialise the attack, even describing the injuries as ‘minor’,” he stated.
Sowore also raised concerns over allegations linking the police commissioner to the incident, describing such claims as “despicable”.
To support his account, he shared a video purportedly showing the commissioner leaving an emergency room after examining the injured persons.
The development followed an earlier statement by the Ekiti State Police Command, which confirmed that Sowore was receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
The command, through its spokesperson, SP Abutu Sunday, had said preliminary findings indicated that the AAC candidate was involved in an altercation at a restaurant in the Dalimore area before police operatives intervened.
It also dismissed reports that Sowore had been kidnapped, explaining that officers responded to a distress call and rescued him.
The Commissioner of Police had subsequently ordered an investigation to determine what transpired and identify those responsible.
However, Sowore’s account directly contradicts the police explanation, with the activist maintaining that the incident was a deliberate attack rather than a disagreement.
