EFCC investigates rapper Oladips’ claim of ₦10m extortion

Nigerian rapper Oladips is dead

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched an investigation into allegations made by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, who claims that operatives of the commission extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention in November 2024.

Oladips, speaking during an interview on the Trending podcast, said he was arrested alongside several residents of his Lagos estate in a midnight raid and held for five days without evidence linking him to any crime.

“They collected ₦10 million from me before they released me,” he said.

“They didn’t find anything on me. So, what was the money for? What was all that stress and suffering for? Nigeria just happened to me.”

In response, the EFCC issued a statement via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, saying it considers the allegations serious and has already begun a formal inquiry.

“The Commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true character of the EFCC,” the statement read.

The agency confirmed that operatives involved in the case have been summoned to its headquarters and temporarily removed from operational duties pending the outcome of investigations.

“Officers in the team that handled his case have been relieved of their operational duties pending the conclusion of investigations,” the statement added.

The EFCC pledged to take disciplinary action against any official found guilty of wrongdoing. However, it also stated that Oladips could face consequences if the allegations are proven false.

“If the allegation is found to be false and made to malign the Commission, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed.”

The agency urged the public to exercise patience while an investigation is ongoing, stating its commitment to maintaining integrity in the fight against corruption.

“The Commission enjoins the public to await the result of its investigations and continue to keep faith with it in its task of tackling economic and financial crimes,” the statement concluded.
