CAN seeks verification of freed kidnapped Niger schoolchildren

The Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger State says it is yet to receive any formal confirmation regarding reports that 100 of the abducted students from Agwara have been freed, though it described the information as potentially positive if verified.

The state CAN chairman, Bishop Bulus Yohanne, made this known in a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Daniel Atori.

Earlier reports suggested that a portion of the students seized from St. Mary Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, had regained their freedom.

The school came under attack on November 21, 2025, when bandits kidnapped no fewer than 303 pupils, students, and teachers.

Within 48 hours of the incident, 50 of the abducted pupils escaped and found their way home.

Just last week, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, paid a visit to the school and reassured both parents and management that the students were alive and would be returned soon.

Responding to the circulating reports, Bishop Yohanne noted that the church remains optimistic but guarded in its expectations.

“It will be a thing of joy if some of our children have been released. We have been praying and waiting for their return. If it is true, then it is cheering news,” he said.

“However, we are not officially aware and have not been duly notified. We hope and pray it’s true and will be looking forward to when the remaining will be released.”
