Three people have been confirmed dead after armed bandits attacked Dangoro village in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, destroying homes and food storage facilities.
The incident, which occurred late on March 28, threw the community into panic as gunmen reportedly stormed the area, firing shots and setting property ablaze.
The spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the attack in a statement on Monday, noting that security operatives responded swiftly after receiving distress calls.
“Armed bandits invaded Dangoro village at about 10:30 p.m., shooting sporadically and setting houses and silos on fire,” Abubakar said.
He explained that a joint team of police officers and local vigilantes was immediately deployed to the scene, where they engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
“Operatives confronted the assailants and successfully repelled the attack, forcing them to retreat into the bush with suspected gunshot wounds,” he added.
Despite the intervention, three people, including a member of the Community Protection Guard, lost their lives during the assault.
The police also disclosed that several residents were injured in the attack.
“Five persons sustained gunshot injuries, while four others suffered burns from the fire,” Abubakar stated.
He added that the attackers destroyed multiple houses, silos containing food grains, and livestock, worsening the humanitarian situation in the area.
According to him, the injured victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, where they are currently receiving treatment.
“They are responding to treatment, and efforts are ongoing to ensure their full recovery,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmad Muhammad, has assured residents of intensified security operations to apprehend those responsible.
“The command remains committed to protecting lives and property. We urge residents to stay calm, remain vigilant, and support security agencies with credible information,” Abubakar said.
Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing attackers.
