Soldiers rescue 41 travellers abducted by bandits in Zamfara

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, have rescued 41 travellers who were reportedly abducted by bandits in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The victims, comprising 24 men, 10 women and seven children, were travelling from Senegal to Kano State when their commercial vehicle reportedly broke down along the highway.

A statement issued by the military operation on Tuesday said the passengers were stranded after the vehicle developed a mechanical fault, giving the bandits an opportunity to attack.

The statement said the armed men attempted to take the travellers into the surrounding area before troops, acting on intelligence, moved in.

“Acting on actionable intelligence, troops swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the armed group with superior firepower,” the statement said.

According to the military, the intervention forced the bandits to abandon the victims and escape through nearby farmlands.

It added that all 41 travellers were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving necessary assistance before being reunited with their families and relevant transit authorities.

The operation said troops had also intensified their presence in the area to protect road users and track the fleeing suspects.

The rescue comes amid ongoing military operations across Zamfara and other parts of the North-West aimed at curbing banditry and protecting communities and travellers.
