Atlético Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, has challenged Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, to raise his overall contribution despite the winger’s electric start in Spain.
Lookman wasted no time announcing himself to the Atlético faithful, producing a goal and an assist on his debut against Real Betis.
The Nigeria international has since built on that display, tallying three goals and two assists in five appearances across all competitions for the Red and Whites.
Simeone Wants Greater Defensive Input
While satisfied with the attacker’s early impact, Simeone has urged Lookman to improve the defensive side of his game in line with Atlético’s demanding philosophy.
“He fits the team perfectly. We just need him to add more collective defensive work to his attacking quality and fully embrace the team spirit that’s always been essential for us,” Simeone told reporters ahead of the league encounter with RCD Espanyol.
Praise for Lookman’s Unique Strengths
The Argentine tactician was also quick to underline what sets the Nigerian apart from his teammates in attack.
“He has different qualities compared to our other forwards. He’s more of a specialist in one-on-ones than in combination play, even though he can do that as well, and he immediately made a very good impact on the team,” he added.
Atlético will welcome Espanyol to the Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday as they look to continue their push in La Liga.
