Aguero urges Atletico to sell ‘unhappy’ Alvarez

Former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona forward, Sergio Aguero, has weighed in on the growing uncertainty surrounding Julian Alvarez’s future, urging Atletico to consider a transfer if the Argentine striker is determined to leave.

Alvarez, 26, has emerged as a major transfer target for Barcelona as the Catalan giants continue planning for life after Robert Lewandowski.

Spanish champions Barca are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, while rivals Real Madrid have also shown interest in the Atletico star.

Reports indicate that Real Madrid recently saw a €150 million offer for Alvarez rejected, with Atletico publicly ridiculing their city rivals over the failed approach.

Although Atletico had previously been confident of retaining the former Manchester City striker, despite intense interest from elsewhere, Alvarez has now made his intentions clear by informing the club that he wants to move on.

“I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at the club I needed to speak with. The best thing for everyone is a transfer, and I want to fulfil my dream.”

His remarks have intensified speculation over his future and left Atletico facing a potentially complicated summer as they seek to resolve the situation.

Barcelona’s well-documented financial constraints could make any deal difficult, especially as they are unlikely to match the fee Atletico reportedly rejected from Real Madrid ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the transfer saga expected to dominate headlines in the coming months, Aguero has advised both the player and the club to find a practical solution.

The former Argentina international, who scored more than 100 goals during his five-year spell at Atletico before later joining Barcelona, believes keeping an unhappy player would benefit no one.

“He says he met with the club and decided a transfer is the best option. It’s very difficult. When a player isn’t happy, each club takes their own stance and the player ends up losing out,” he told Jijantes FC.

“If he’s not comfortable, the best thing is to find a solution and sell him. You’re not going to have a player in a bad mood all year round.”

While uncertainty continues to surround his club future, Alvarez has yet to make a major impact at the World Cup, with Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez preferred in Argentina’s starting lineup for both group-stage victories in the United States.
