Arsenal edge Newcastle 2-1 in comeback win

Gabriel struck deep into stoppage time to hand Arsenal a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to just two points.

The Gunners climbed into second place with 13 points from six games, while Newcastle slipped to 15th, stuck on six points from the same number of fixtures.

The Magpies went ahead in the 34th minute when Nick Woltemade powered home a header from a short-corner routine, capitalising on a poor back-pass by Arsenal’s Cristhian Mosquera that gifted the hosts the opportunity.

Arsenal pressed relentlessly but wasted numerous chances until Mikel Merino finally broke through with a glancing header in the 84th minute.
