Abia LP elects new state chairman

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has concluded its state congress with the election of Mr Peter Azubuike as the new state chairman in a process described as peaceful and largely consensual.

The congress, held on Saturday in Umuahia, the state capital, also produced other members of the State Working Committee, including Mr Chucks Akamadu as state secretary, Ben Otti as organising secretary, and Mr Emenike Iroegbu as publicity secretary. Party delegates reportedly adopted consensus arrangements to fill key positions.

Governor Alex Otti, who addressed party members after the exercise, commended the orderly conduct of the congress, describing it as a sign of unity and maturity within the party structure.

“This is the kind of political culture we have always envisioned,” Otti said.

“Today marks a new beginning where we all move in the same direction rather than working at cross purposes. We will continue to support the party and its leadership to ensure a smooth and effective administration.”

The governor also praised the outgoing acting leadership for stabilising the party ahead of the congress, urging them to remain active contributors to its progress.

In his acceptance speech, Azubuike pledged to strengthen internal unity and expand the party’s influence across Abia State.

“I am honoured by this responsibility and grateful for the confidence reposed in me,” he said.

“Our focus will be to build a stronger, more united Labour Party that is fully prepared for future electoral contests. We will also work closely with the popularity and structure already established in the state to consolidate our gains.”

The newly elected leadership is expected to steer the party as it positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
