The Southwest leader of the New Nigerian People’s Party, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan, has officially announced his resignation from the party.
Olopoeyan, who served as the face and overall leader of the NNPP in the Southwest, was a key financial supporter of the party in Oyo State. A former chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party in Oyo State, Olopoeyan joined the NNPP over two years ago and played a pivotal role in establishing it as a significant opposition force in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday titled Resignation from the New Nigerian People’s Party, Olopoeyan reflected on his steadfast commitment to the growth of the NNPP in Oyo State and explained the personal reasons behind his decision to step down.
He stated, “It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the New Nigerian People’s Party effective immediately. While this decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one.”
Olopoeyan expressed gratitude to the party’s foundation members and its Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Boniface Aniebonam, as well as other party leaders, for their support and camaraderie throughout his time with the NNPP.
Despite stepping away from the party, Olopoeyan assured his continued respect for and external political relationship with Chief Aniebonam. While acknowledging the difficulty of his decision, he emphasised its necessity for personal reasons.
“It was an honour to contribute to the development of NNPP and help establish it as a major opposition party in Oyo State,” Olopoeyan remarked.
The announcement marks the end of Olopoeyan’s active role in the NNPP, leaving questions about the party’s leadership and financial stability in the Southwest region.
