Gov Yusuf’s exit marks major turning point – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party has described the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, as a defining moment in the party’s history, calling it “the end of an era” and a significant political turning point.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, and shared with Vanguard in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the party said it accepted Governor Yusuf’s resignation “in good faith.”

His departure, the statement noted, marked the culmination of a phase closely tied to the influence of the party’s former presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Governor Yusuf reportedly cited prolonged internal wrangling and leadership disputes within the NNPP, which the party acknowledged had strained cohesion, particularly in Kano State.

Under the leadership of National Chairman Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major, the party emphasized that these internal crises had created significant challenges for unity and effective coordination.

“The resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf marks the conclusion of a difficult chapter in the life of our party. We wish him well in his future political endeavours and urge our members nationwide to remain calm, resilient and committed to building a strong political platform capable of delivering a new Nigeria,” the statement read.

While expressing regret over the circumstances surrounding the governor’s exit, the NNPP described the internal conflicts that prompted it as avoidable.

Though the statement was critical of Senator Kwankwaso and his political group, the party highlighted its commitment to moving forward without distractions.

Reaffirming confidence in its founding leadership, the NNPP reminded that the party has existed for over 25 years and will endure beyond current disagreements.

The statement also paid tribute to its founder, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, acknowledging his role in establishing a solid foundation and articulating a vision for national renewal.

Despite the setback in Kano State, the NNPP expressed optimism about its future, pledging to reinforce its structures nationwide ahead of upcoming elections.

“The NNPP will continue to grow stronger, with renewed clarity of purpose and unity,” the statement concluded, adding that the party is positioning itself for sustained relevance beyond 2027.
